Entry-level Machines
The novice machines from brand names such as Singer and Brother are well accepted, and buyers can acquire them fairly inexpensively. These entry level machines have all the basic features for occasional sewing, such as straight and zigzag stitches, adjustable stitch length and width, and reverse stitch.
Mid-level Machines
Advanced machines, with more push buttons, knobs and electronic parts, from brands such as Janome and BERNINA, are well known for quality and customer support. They are pricier than the novie machines, still they bring features that make frequent sewing easier. Shoppers can look forward to find a free arm, automatic buttonhole maker, automatic needle threader, and a wide selection of built-in stitches.
Top-of-the-line Machines
Industrial type sewing machines with high-end brand name such as BERNINA, Pfaff, and Husqvarna/Viking are the most expensive. They are so loaded with feature that these machines virtually sew by themselves. Several of these advanced features include automatic feeding system, automatic stitch length and width, automatic tension, and electronic autopilot.
Picking a Price Point
Although mechanical machines are by and large less expensive than electronic, prices still vary widely. It is unnecessary to purchase a machine that has irrelevant features the sewer does not use, as buyers can always upgrade in a few years as skills improve.
